Wizz Air has announced it is opening a new base at Gatwick Airport, with flights available to some of the most popular European holiday destinations.

Gatwick will become the third UK base for the budget airline, which also operates from London Luton and Doncaster in Sheffield.

Where can I fly to?

Wizz Air will launch four routes from its new base to destinations in Spain, Greece, Italy and Malta.

The airline plans to allocate one Airbus A321 aircraft to Gatwick, which has recently seen Virgin Atlantic, British Airways and Easyjet all vacate in the wake of a financially difficult year for the travel industry due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Wizz Air flights will begin running to Athens, Naples, Malta and Lanzarote from 22 October, with fares for the new routes starting at £21.99 each way. Tickets for the new flight routes are now available to book online.

Travellers can also use the airline’s Flex service as an add-on to their fare, which will allow flights to be cancelled up to three hours before departure, with 100 per cent of the fare immediately reimbursed in airline credit.Customers can change the dates and routes of their flights an unlimited number of times.

7 new Doncaster routes

While Wizz Air has already been flying from Gatwick since 2016, the new base marks the first time it will be permanently set up at the London airport.

The announcement follows the airline’s recent expansion at Doncaster Sheffield, which was confirmed just a week ago, on 13 August. Its new permanent home at the Yorkshire-based airport will serve seven new routes, including Alicante and Malaga in Spain, Larnaca in Cyprus, Faro in Portugal, Lublin in Poland, Kosice in Slovakia and Suceava in Romania.

These routes will all operate from 22 October, with tickets priced from £17.99.

In addition to its three UK bases, Wizz Air also offers flights from 11 airports in the UK.
