Beef Carbon Reduction Scheme highlights need for ANC scheme - Murphy

Áine Murphy MLA has commented on the latest Beef Carbon Reduction Scheme figures highlighting both the importance of supporting the farming sector and the need to ensure farmers in disadvantaged areas are not left behind.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said: “While the Beef Carbon Reduction Scheme has delivered welcome funding for farmers, the figures also highlight the unique challenges facing Fermanagh where farming is predominantly based on suckler herds and store cattle production.

“The county recorded the lowest participation and payment levels under the scheme, reinforcing the need for targeted support for farmers working in disadvantaged and marginal areas.

“That is why there remains a strong case for introducing an Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) payment to recognise the additional natural and geographical challenges many farming families face.

“My colleague Declan McAleer's Private Members’ Bill would provide the legislative basis for an ANC scheme and help ensure farmers working some of the most challenging land are properly supported and not unfairly disadvantaged.”
