CAFRE and Teagasc to host joint dairy calf to beef webinars

The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) in conjunction with Teagasc have announced that they are to collaborate on presenting two virtual beef technology events in October.

CAFRE Beef Technologist, Natasha Ferguson said: “Across Europe, almost two thirds of the animals raised for beef or veal production originate from the dairy herd as opposed to suckler herds. A well-managed dairy beef system has the potential to sustainably produce consistently high quality beef, in addition to generating positive margins at farm level.

“In May 2020, CAFRE provided the farming industry with an introduction to the new dairy calf to beef technology project being delivered at CAFRE based predominantly on Teagasc research. As a result, CAFRE and Teagasc have come together to deliver two joint dairy calf to beef technology events which will also feature a CAFRE beef grassland Technology Demonstration Farm (TDF) participant.”

The first of the two events will take place on Thursday, October 8 starting at 7.30pm and will feature Drystock Specialist Alan Dillon from Teagasc, Natasha Ferguson from CAFRE and Co Down based TDF farmer, James Henderson.

The topics to be covered in the first event will include an overview of current Teagasc Research; the background to CAFRE’s dairy calf to beef technology project; and update on CAFRE’s KT project; the economics of calf rearing and James Henderson’s farm overview.

The panel for this event will be Graeme Campbell (Senior Beef and Sheep Technologist, CAFRE); Natasha Ferguson (Beef Technologist, CAFRE); James Henderson (CAFRE Technology Demonstration Farmer); Alan Dillon (Drystock Specialist, Teagasc) and Pearse Kelly (Head of Drystock, Teagasc).
