Industry must work together in the fight against BVD - Barton

Ulster Unionist spokesperson on Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs Rosemary Barton MLA has said more information is required in relation to the higher number of BVD issues in Fermanagh compared to other parts of Northern Ireland.

Mrs Barton said: “Significant work has been carried out over recent years to eradicate BVD, therefore it is disappointing that incident levels are increasing.

“Once again there is concern that known positive BVD animals are ‘disappearing’ from herds, registered as either lost or stolen.

“The vast majority of farmers play a very positive and responsible role in their dealing with animal health and welfare, therefore they should not be punished for the small number that do not abide by the rules.

“I note that figures relate to positive or inconclusive BVD results together. It may be useful to separate that figure again into positive and inconclusive, as not all inconclusive tests are positive.

“It is clear there is still some work to be done on this matter, it is important that the industry works together to deliver a better outcome,” she concluded.
