Macra national conference to put the future of farming and rural Ireland in the spotlight

“Staking Our Claim” conference to focus on CAP funding, generational renewal and the future of rural communities.

Macra’s National Conference will take place at Fitzgerald’s Woodlands Hotel on Saturday, 24 October, bringing young farmers and rural young people together to discuss the future of Irish agriculture and rural Ireland.

Under the theme Staking Our Claim – Securing the Future of Farming and Rural Ireland, this year’s conference will focus on two issues central to Macra’s work: the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and generational renewal.

As negotiations on the next CAP intensify, Macra is calling for meaningful financial commitments to support the next generation of farmers. Rising costs, access to land and finance, and farm viability remain significant barriers for young people seeking to enter or develop a career in agriculture. Generational renewal must move beyond political ambition and be backed by targeted supports that give young farmers the confidence and opportunity to build sustainable businesses.

The conference will feature two panel discussions examining how agricultural and rural development policy can deliver for the next generation.

Our Future at Stake – Farming Beyond 2027 will explore the role of future CAP supports in addressing farm viability, generational renewal, access to land and investment. Meanwhile, Claiming Our Place – Building the Future of Rural Ireland will examine how rural development policy can support young farmers, rural enterprise and young people who want to build their lives and careers in rural communities.

Speakers include CEJA president Peter Meedendorp, Teagasc’s Anne Kinsella and UCD’s Dr Brian Leonard, alongside speakers bringing valuable on-the-ground experience.

Several high-profile guests will also attend, with further details to be announced through Macra’s social media channels.

The conference will consider a fundamental question: how can European agricultural and rural development policy give the next generation the support and opportunity to farm, work and build their futures in rural Ireland?

Macra national president Josephine O’Neill is looking forward to the event.

She said: “I’m delighted to welcome such prestigious speakers to our national conference. Together, I have no doubt that they will ensure a wide-ranging conversation highlighting not just the challenges faced by rural Ireland and farming families but the opportunities that the future will offer.”

Strong rural communities are essential to the future of Irish agriculture. Ensuring young people can access opportunities, establish viable careers and remain in the communities they call home must be central to that future.

The conference is open to everyone, and all are welcome to attend.

The conference is part of the wider timetable of activities taking place across the weekend, as part of Macra’s annual rally.

The weekend will also see attendees embark on farm tours, compete in competitions and have the chance to mix and mingle with Macra members from across the country.
