A PSNI spokesman said police received a report of a vehicle on fire on the Cushendall Road, Ballycastle, in the early hours of Sunday morning, 5th July. They said officers attended alongside colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who extinguished the blaze. There were no persons present with the vehicle. The north Antrim MLA added that ‘the incident at Ballycastle Golf Club in the early hours of Sunday morning is so concerning’ and ‘I know many people in our community will have been shocked to see the extent of the damage caused’.
‘Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, but this could easily have had a much more serious outcome,’ he added.
‘I want to pay tribute to the PSNI and the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service for their swift response in bringing the situation under control.
‘I also want to acknowledge the impact this has had on Ballycastle Golf Club, whose grounds have suffered significant damage as a result of this incident.
‘This was an extremely reckless incident, and it highlights once again the dangers associated with dangerous driving and anti-social behaviour on our roads.
‘There is also growing concern locally in Ballycastle around illegal rallying activity in the area, which puts lives at risk and has no place in our community.

‘Police enquiries are ongoing, and I would encourage anyone who witnessed the incident, saw the vehicle beforehand, or has CCTV, dash-cam or other footage from the Cushendall Road area in the early hours of Sunday morning to come forward. Even the smallest piece of information could assist investigators.
‘Anyone with information should contact the PSNI on 101, quoting reference 30 05/07/26, or provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers’.
