A recent example of the Institute’s important role is the ongoing Bluetongue (BTV) outbreak which could have a huge impact on mart and farming customers’ businesses. The Institute is liaising with Scottish Government, vets and other industry stakeholders to find pragmatic solutions.

Commenting on his appointment, John, who is Executive Chairman of United Auctions, headquartered at Stirling Agricultural Centre, said:

"Livestock marts continue to play a central role in the rural economy, supporting farmers through price discovery and access to high value markets, as well as remaining an important social and business hub for the community. It’s important to ensure that policy and business continue to give the marts the opportunity to thrive, and I am very pleased to lead the Council at this time.

"I’d also like to thank Alan for leading the Institute over the last three years and all the work he has done to ensure the Institute continues to work hard for its membership."

The Institute celebrated its centenary this year. It was formed in 1926 following a collapse in livestock prices after the First World War. Under economic and political pressure, mart businesses sought greater co-operation and a collective voice to represent their interests and promote the auction system.

Executive Director of The Institute of Auctioneers, Neil Wilson, welcomed the appointment:

“John has a very impressive background in the sector and brings broad experience of the business challenges, operations and opportunities for marts, between running the Stirling Bull Sales and both mainland and island marts. He has been part of the Institute for many years and he fully understands the landscape we are working in and what we want to achieve for our members. I look forward to working with him.”
